Gonopteryx rhamni

Leaf shaped wings and yellow-green color makes this butterfly a camouflage master. This ability helps him hide during hibernation period, as butterfly leaves for thirteen months, and survives winter period. Hibernation helps him during difficult summer period too.

The fact that Gonopteryx is one of longest living butterfly explains his appearance in early summer and late autumn. I even heard that he can survive for two or three years, but that is probably just a rumor.

While males are yellow, their female partner is brighter and greener.

Even though it is 14th November, I saw this butterfly today flying together with Colias alfacaiensis, Colias croceus and Polygonia c-album. It looks like they did not care about upcoming winter :)

Lampides boeticus

While other people actually enjoy swimming the sea and burning them self on the beaches, I prefer to dive or take a walk. It is nt hard to see that in Montenegro, every living creature is different than those found in Serbia. Even plants are trying to "bite" you with spins all over their leafs and stem. :) After all, it is a very nice place for a biologist.

During my summer time, I had a chance to meet many new butterfly species. Lampides boeticus was one of them, and I spent hours truing to photograph it. In Serbia, you will probably have more chance to see its relative, Leptotes pirithous (image bellow), but both of them are one of the most beautiful members od European Lycaenidae butterfly family. I hope you will enjoy this pictures...

Parnassius apollo

This butterfly can be found on rocky mountain meadows across Serbia. If you want to see it, you will have to climb up to 1500m, enjoying the most beautiful parts of my country.

The species is listed as vulnerable and protected by many international conventions and Serbian law.

If you get close enough to Parnassius apollo butterfly, he may worn you by scratching its wings, showing „big red eyes“ and making some unpleasant sounds. Butterfly just tried to worn you not to eat him, because his body is full of poison! This poison is collected during caterpillar stage from its host plant (Sedum album).

I hope this rare butterfly, and its Apolon beauty will march across Serbian mountains for many years.
